Question by zockedi: Does anyone else feel hugely ambivalent about “king of pop” Michael Jackson?
I remember him as the little guy with shining eyes and amazing energy, jumping around the stage, incandescent.
I remember a cold business man, learning of his friend Paul McCartney’s wish to buy his own Beatles catalogue – and then sneakily beating him to it, tossing aside the friendship.
I remember, a gentle soul, kind to animals, and full of empathy for the Elephant man.
I remember a 40-something adult plying young boys (and boys only) with wine and porn mags and sharing their beds.
I remember a frightened, delightfully charismatic, shy man giving an Oprah interview in which he talks about how scared he was of his abusive father.
I remember an ill, 50 year old man, barely able to walk (using a wheelchair most days) barely able to speak, with one blind eye – encouraging lots of devoted fans to part with their money and see him perform…didn’t he know it was a lie?
I remember the electrifying magic of a 20-something Michael Jackson moonwalking….can anything compare? It’s the closest thing to magic we’ll ever encounter.
I remember him settling out of court over child abuse charges. I remember the disgusted account of his tour manager who knew of him taking kids to his room and his security system which alerted him minutes in advance if anyone entered.
I remember how adventurous and original Thriller was, hitting our screens and tranforming music videos into stories – along with Bowie, he reinvented the music video.
I remember hearing a story a friend told of a boy whose parents she knew. He had visited Neverland and had a lovely time. The second time he went there he came back frightened and started wetting his pants for no reason, just standing there in rooms, unable to control himself. Heartbreaking.
I remember the beautiful boy Michael Jackson was, and the sensitive creative, inspired young man…but it all fell apart so quickly…begining with Bad. He had such demons. I can see why he turned himself into a monster – in thriller, and later with plastic surgery.
He must have known something was wrong inside.
The truth? Michael Jackson’s life – with it’s highs and lows was the biggest fall from grace in American History. The greatest American Tragedy of all time.
How do you feel about it?
